Actinic keratosis (AK) is a scaly, crusty, rough lesion that forms on the skin in areas exposed to the sun. It often appears on the face, lips, scalp, ears, shoulders, and regions regularly exposed. Generally, the areas of skin affected will present with several lesions. Because of this factor, the plural of this condition is called actinic keratoses. These lesions develop progressively over time and might vanish and reappear. The lesions are often uncomfortable, itchy, and eventually become irritated. At Skin Win Dermatology, our team can perform a comprehensive skin assessment and provide you with options to remove actinic keratosis. Contact our location in Williston, Bismarck, or Minot, ND to set up an appointment.

Prompt intervention and treatment are important so an isolated actinic keratosis (or even multiple keratoses) does not become skin cancer. The treatment choice recommended will vary based on numerous factors, like your age and health, skin color, how prevalent the condition is, growth characteristics of the lesion(s), location, etc. Frequently used treatment options include:

  • Cryosurgery: This method uses liquid nitrogen to destroy lesions.
  • Electrodesiccation & Curettage: ED&C is a procedure that removes skin lesions by scraping the skin down to a healthy layer.
  • Medicines: Certain medications can be beneficial in reducing the look and size of lesions and decreasing the likelihood of scarring.
  • Chemical Peels: Specialized exfoliating solutions used in chemical peels work to remove the top layer of unhealthy skin, prompting new collagen growth and replacing the damaged tissues.

I am so thrilled we have another dermatologist in Minot. Dr. Hoffman was very professional and friendly. He answered my questions and addressed my concerns. I HIGHLY recommend his services!

Went to SkinWin and saw Dr Hoffman and was so pleased with how quick I was able to get in, address my concerns and offered to look at any other concerns on my skin that I had. Very professional and reassuring. I’ll be going back. So glad I didn’t have to make an additional appointment to ask more questions.
